Crazy Chilli: Slot Overview
Ready to get all wild and crazy players, maybe down something hot to get the taste buds a-tingling? If so, then maybe consider giving Crazy Chilli from Blueprint Gaming a try. Or not, since Crazy Chilli is, for the most part, a clone of The Goonies Hey You Guys with a fairly generic skin stretched over the recycled maths and gaming. So, not overly crazy, in other words. Never mind, for a cash symbol collect game with four different types of collect symbols, let's dip Crazy Chilli in some hot sauce and see what happens.
First off, Crazy Chilli is held in a classic Mexican-inspired cobblestone street with flags on strings, cacti, and colourfully painted buildings. A nice enough view, but one that has graced countless south-of-the-border slots by now to be passé. The music, too, is nice but somewhat generic as well. Certainly, players entranced by Crazy Chilli's environment get a nice, if cliched, spot to bed down in, but in both audiovisuals and gaming, there are little to no surprises to uncover here.
Crazy Chilli's active area is a 5-reel, 3-row grid with 10 paylines, and if you look to the left of the reels, you'll see four different collect symbols. The bottom one is active from the get-go, while the other 3 are unlocked as play progresses. Full details as to how this occurs are included in the next section. Bets of 10 c to $/€100 per spin may be wagered in what is a medium volatile online slot with a maximum RTP of 95%.
Regular pay symbols create winning combinations when they line up along a pay line from the leftmost side of the grid over consecutive reels. Card ranks J to A are Crazy Chilli's low pays, while its high pays are a cactus, a shot glass of tequila, a hot sauce bottle, and the game's logo. For hitting a 5-of-a-kind winning combo, the rewards are 5-7.5x the bet for the low pays or 10 to 100 times the bet for the highs. Wilds help connect winning combinations together by substituting for any regular pay symbol.
Crazy Chilli: Slot Features
Crazy Chilli comes with the same features as The Goonies Hey You Guys, except it does not have those random modifiers. That leaves cash symbol collections, cashpot prizes, and multipliers in its free spins round.
Cash Collect
Cash symbols are present on reels 1 to 4. If a Chilli Bottle collect symbol lands on the rightmost reel when cash symbols are in view, the Chilli Bottle expands to cover all positions on its reel and collects the cash symbol values. When a session begins, the regular Chilli Bottle symbol is active. Once the Chilli Bottle symbol has collected cash symbols, the Respin Chilli Bottle symbol becomes available. When the Respin Chilli Bottle symbol has collected cash symbols, then the Boost Chilli Bottle is activated, then when this one collects cash symbols, then the Super Collect Chilli Bottle symbol is activated. Once all 4 Chilli Bottle symbols are activated, they are available from then on in the base game and in free spins.
- Respin Chilli Bottle – collects any cash symbols in view, then locks in place while reels 1-4 respin for another chance to collect cash symbols.
- Boost Chilli Bottle – collects any cash symbols in view as well as awarding a cash boost to the final collected amount.
- Super Collect – collects the values of any cash symbols in view up to 10 times.
Cash symbols possess cash values of 1 to 50 times the bet or cashpot values. The cashpots in Crazy Chilli are the Mini, Minor, Major, or Mega worth 10x, 25x, 100x, or 2,000x the bet, respectively.
Super Spicy Free Spins
Hitting 3 scatter symbols on reels 2, 3, and 4 awards 10 free spins. Free spins use the same Cash Collect feature as in the base game. As well, when Chilli Bottles hit, they are collected on a meter. Collecting 3, 6, 9, or 12 Chilli Bottles awards an x2, x3, x5, and x10 multiplier, plus 5 free spins at each collection point. Multipliers apply to the cash symbols that Chilli Bottles collect.
Crazy Chilli: Slot Verdict
By the end of reviewing Crazy Chilli, it was clear that the game wasn't as crazy as it purported to be. On the contrary, a look over the paytable made it clear this was a follow-on from The Goonies Hey You Guys, so there was little apparent nuttiness to stay on our toes for. About the zaniest thing was the omission of the modifiers available in the Goonies game. The rest was just repeat viewing in a generic chilli/mariachi-type setting.
While The Goonies Hey You Guys was, in turn, faintly related to D10S Maradona, an even earlier release, which had four unlockable collect symbols, the fact it was populated by recognisable characters caused any negativity over feature reuse to be clouded out (or at least reduced) by feelings of goodwill generated by revisiting such a beloved classic film. Then came Funky Buddha, which was a so-so redo of the Goonies game, now Crazy Chilli, the hardest one of the lot to fall for. At least Funky Buddha had a humorously original use of theme to it. Crazy Chilli, by comparison, is just plain old chilli stuff that's been seen countless times before in other chilli/Mexican-themed games.
On a technical level, the gameplay on offer here is as good (or as bad) as it has been on the previous occasions this feature set has been used. But, the repeat performance and the uninspiring execution of the subject matter meant Crazy Chilli ended up being a rather plain, mild sauce rather than a zany celebration of all things spicy.
Mediocre
Crazy Chilli’s recycled gaming and unimaginative skin failed to cause much of a temperature rise.
